Oil Change Time Again?

Fox Auto Care Recommends Valvoline

As we look at the current economic situation we are reminded of the constant need to be cautious with our resources. At Fox Auto Care we have been researching ways to help you save money and properly maintain your vehicle. One of the big debates for the last several years has been the 3,000 mile oil change. While there is a lot of information available it seems that there is no one taking a stand on the issue.

With the increased quality of both today’s oil and vehicles we believe that the 3,000 mile oil change needs to be retired.

Most vehicle manufacturers have extended service intervals to 5,000 or more on regular oil and 10,000 or more on synthetic. Many vehicles have on board monitors to evaluate your driving habits and determine the oil change interval for you.

We recommend you check out www.3000milemyth.org for an excellent summary of the research done. We are suggesting that you service every 5,000 miles with regular oil and 10,000 miles with synthetic if you do not have an on board system. This provides convenient timing because it is also the recommended time for tire rotation and many factory service intervals.

There is a down side to extended intervals that must be addressed as well. Most engines consume small quantities of oil when running and as a result can be low on oil before the 5,000 mile interval.

We recommend that you check your oil regularly to ensure that you do not cause any damage from lack of lubricant.

How Much Should I Pay For a Brake Repair Job?

February 10th, 2009
We are often asked this question and to properly answer this requires some background information. When shopping for brake repairs by telephone you need to be aware of the pitfalls that can occur.
The first thing to recognize is that without a complete inspection it is impossible to get an accurate estimate because there are many variables, such as do you need brake pads only or brake rotors also? You might need calipers and hoses, or shoes and wheel cylinders.
What about the brake hardware and master cylinder? Do you need a brake fluid service? After those questions are identified then you have to decide what level of quality and performance you desire form your brake system. There are usually many brands of parts and levels of quality available for each type of automobile.

Even describing one as the “best” may not help you because you need to know what it is “best” at. A pad can be designed for the best high speed hard braking, or the best long lasting pad, or the “quietest”, or even the “cleanest.” When getting a telephone estimate some shops will quote their lowest price brake job to get you in the door and then offer a “better” pad after you are there.
At Fox Auto Care we offer a free brake inspection in order to give you an accurate estimate and you will never receive high pressure sales tactics once your vehicle is here.
We are always happy to show you what brake repair work is needed on your vehicle and take the time to insure that you fully understand what your options are. Please call us at 714-427-5870 or email us at service@foxautocare.com to set up an appointment.
